The group of Year 8 girls took part in the Pretty Muddy Watford 5K to support Cancer Research UK and their friend Ellie Brewer, who has leukaemia.
The event involved crawling under netting, surmounting obstacles, and a mud bath at the finish line.
But the girls said: “We would do it again!”
In recognition of their work, they were presented with the Maltings Community Award by the owners of the St Albans shopping mall.
They were also given a cheque for £1,000, which they intend to donate to Ellie’s family.
However they are not quite done yet. The girls are now organising a school non-uniform day and a cake sale.
“We are doing the cake sale and non-uniform day to raise money for Ellie. On the non-uniform day everyone will bring in £1.”
While the proceeds from the run went to Cancer Research UK, the cake sale and the non-uniform day will go to Ellie’s family.
Ellie is currently staying at University College London Hospital, where she has just finished a 10-day session of chemotherapy.
One of the girls’ mums has described the teenage cancer ward Ellie is staying on as a “home from home”.
The mother added: “She made a few friends in the hospital. It is really important that she is with her peers.”
The hospital, in addition to treatment, also provides teachers so the patients can keep up with their school work.
The teenage cancer ward treats cancer patients between 13 and 24, and also provides adjacent beds for their parents and carers to sleep in.
To help fund Ellie’s care at the hospital, a GoFundMe page has been set up by her ballet group and has so far raised nearly £1,000 in less than a month.
It is testament to their dedication to help Ellie that after the interview, the girls went straight home to design the posters for the non-uniform day.
